Environmental rehabilitation of Schistos and Ano Liosia landfills

This is an intervention that will significantly improve the quality of life of the local community that mainly suffered the annoyances of the past 25 - 30 years. This intervention is included in the aggregate program for the waste management in Attica of a total budget at 45 billion GRD

Objectives

With the rehabilitation works of the landfills:

  • The landfills of Ano Liosia and Schistos, of a land area of 2,500 acres, are modified into areas of green, recreation and cultural activities
  • The atmospheric pollution that is caused by landfills is being addressed
  • The emitted bio-gas consists of 55% methane (CH4), 44% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 1% or less, of various other substances, some of which are rather toxic and malodorous.
  • The total amount of hydrocarbon deriving from the waste disposal area of Schistos is estimated at 50,000 tons per year, and another 60,000 tons per year deriving from Ano Liosia.

    It should be mentioned that:

    • Methane, when transported in the Basin of Athens, is a primary pollutant. Moreover, it contributes to the greenhouse effect.
    • Carbon dioxide also contributes to the greenhouse effect and in large quantities is considered a "pollutant", since it alters the percentile analogy of the gases that compose the atmosphere.

  • Through the rehabilitation of the two areas, the generated bio-gas will be collected, cleaned and used as an energy source. Consequently, the above effects from the emission of methane would cease to exist. Moreover, an equal amount of conventional fuel will be substituted by another, which is environmentally friendly.

Implementation course of the interventions and works. Report

Rehabilitation of the waste disposal area in Schistos

  • Already the debris from the subway excavations are properly utilized for the formation of the terrain.
  • The first phase of the tender submission of the works has been concluded and in June, the pre-selection tenders (technical and economic) will be submitted.
  • The contract signature and the contractor nomination is planned for September 1995, and the works will be completed in 1997.
  • The works are subsidised by the Cohesion Fund, of a total budget 3.2 billion GRD
  • The preliminary studies and research works, of a cost at 51 million GRD, have been concluded.
  • When the works in the landfills will be concluded, the area will be modified into an environmentally upgraded pole and a recreation area for the wider region of Piraeus.

  • Indicatively, there will be:

    • Pedestrian areas, reaching all points of interest in the rehabilitated waste terrain
    • A display area of cultural activities
    • Outdoor cinema
    • A refreshment stand with the potential to expand it into a restaurant
    • A nursery garden and a greenhouse
    • Energy exploitation of bio-gas facility

Rehabilitation - Restoration of the landfill in Ano Liosia

    • The contractor for the construction of the works of the first phase is already installed
    • The first phase of the tender submission for the rest of the works, has been concluded and in June the offers will be submitted
    • The rehabilitation works will be concluded in 1999, of a total budget 4.6 billion GRD
    • The preliminary studies and research works, of a cost at 102 million GRD, have been concluded

    • When the works in the landfill of Nea Liosia will be completed, the area will be modified into a recreation pole and a meeting area for the public, since there would be:

      • Extensive areas of green
      • Recreation grounds with fun fairs. The power needs of these play grounds will be covered by localized power generation from the exploitation of bio-gas
      • Outdoor theatre
      • Refreshment stands, in selected areas and in a pleasant environment.
