Coasts. Rehabilitation Program - Land Uses
The interventions program includes:
A study on land uses and necessary urban planning interventions in the totality of coasts, in order to render the coasts free for all citizens of the Basin to use.
Research in the framework of European Union's program ENVIREG (delegated to the National Polytechnic School of Athens by the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works), on the management, protection and distinction of Coastal Metropolitan Regions of Saronicos, which have been subjected to intensive use.
Establishing marine transportation of Piraiki - Lavrio with intermediate ports and securing pilot operation in 1995.
Implementation of the program. Progress. Course. Report
The land use study involving the stage of analysis and systematic assortment of specific proposals from Local Authorities and other involved bodies, has been completed and the final proposal is being worked out.
This proposal has been presented to the competent bodies. After the considering all views, the proposal will be finalized and will be fostered for enactment. This is expected to take place by mid 1996.
The management and protection of the coasts research has been completed and received by the Organisation of Planning of Athens. This research is being processed, so that all problems pertaining to coasts will be addressed integrally and systematically.
Furthermore, in the framework of management and protection of coastal areas, the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, has carried out a coast cleaning project in the Municipality of Attica.
The project has been implemented along a 130 klm coastline of the prefecture, and has encompassed the coasts of the islands of Salamina and Aeghina. The project, effected during the summer period July - August - September 1994, resulted in the removal of an enormous quantity of waste (2,000 tons) from the above-mentioned coasts.
This waste consisted of various bulky and heavy objects, refuse discarded by bathers and holiday-makers, as well as other objects, for example branches, plastic materials etc, washed ashore by the sea.
Moreover, 5,000 tons of seaweed have been removed from the coasts.
The studies concerning coastal areas of the Municipality of Attica have been concluded, and the tender of the works, submitted by the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, or the Prefectures, is under way. The 2 km pedestrian walkway - bicycle lane project in the Municipality of Marathonas is under construction. The work is estimated to cost 110 million GRD.

Nea Makri beach 2nd phase (pedestrian walkway - bicycle track)
Ble Limanaki in Rafina
Kokkino Limanaki in Rafina up to the municipality of Artemida
Marikes - Rafina
Poros beach (2nd and 3rd phase)
Studies have been undertaken for the following regions:
Municipality of Artemida (coastal zone from St, Nikolaos to St. Spyridon)
Municipality of Nea Makri (from the St. Andreas camping site and 17 klm to the south - pedestrian walkway, bicycle lane)
Municipality of Nea Makri (from the St. Andreas camping site and 1,200 m to the north - pedestrian walkway, bicycle lane)
Municipality of Marathonas (from southern borders of the Schinias thicket to the end of the 1st phase study for Marathonas beach)
Municipality of Marathonas (bicycle lane in Marathonas beach)
Municipality of Marathonas (Schinias thicket beach)
