Restoration of Inactive Quarries of Inert Matters

 
Gradual rehabilitation / exploitation of inactive quarry areas, with specific interventions on a local scale, contributes to the improvement of the quality and quantity of green in peri-urban and urban zones and to the establishment of recreation poles for the inhabitants of neighbouring municipalities.

Through the restoration, rehabilitation and planting of trees in the 60 inactive quarries, a total land area of 25,000 acres, landscape of Attica's massifs which often resembles that of a the lunar setting, may be radically changed. For the rehabilitation of the areas, soil from the metro works excavations as well as from other public of private works, is being used.

Through the restoration and rehabilitation works as well as the planting of trees, the following ensues:

  • The full restoration of the natural terrain. This, along with the planting of trees, results in the environmental upgrading of the entire area. Specifically, so far 700 acres have been rehabilitated and the rehabilitation of another 2,200 acres is under way.
  • The establishing of local and wider area recreation poles.
  • The reduction of traffic congestion caused by debris transportation trucks.

 
Implementation of the Program. Course, Progress, Report.

For the quarry area known as "Lambrika" in the Municipality of Kropia (land area of 50 acres), the restoration study has been completed and approved, while the depositing of debris is carried out at a rapid pace. This has resulted in the largest part of the restoration of the natural terrain to be nearing completion. The total restoration and rehabilitation works will be completed in 1995.

In the inactive quarry area at the location known as "Lombarda" of St. Marina in the municipality of Kropia, under the title "D. & G. Kyriakou", the debris depositing has been completed.
The terrain has been restored,
the study has been finalised and implanting works have commenced by the Directorate of Reforestations in Attica.

80% of the terrain restoration at the inactive quarry in the "Skaramangas" area has been completed.
The lack of good quality clay matter, however, an essential condition for securing the success of the implanting phase, resulted in delays in the restoration of terrain in this quarry. Its completion is now estimated by the end of May.

The study for the rehabilitation of the inactive quarry area under the title "Viaropoulos", within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Galatsi, has been delegated. (The commencement of debris depositing is foreseen by the end of 1995). The study for the restoration of the inactive quarry known as "Siakandari - Municipality of Ano Liosia", an area of approximately 70 acres, has been completed.

The study for the restoration of the inactive quarry "Kamboli", in the Municipality of Aspropyrgos, of an area of approximately 30 acres is being concluded. Provisions have been made for the depositing of all materials that have been occasionally disposed of in the area between the National Road and the coastline of Saronic. Through this, the to-be-created Western Gate of Athens will be upgraded.

Studies are being conducted for the restoration and depositing of excavation materials in the inactive quarry named "Frangos" in the Municipality of Ano Liosia.
