Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius)

The first encounter with a Blue Rock Thrush is, in most cases, an unforgettable experience, especially in spring, when the male's plumage acquires a startling metallic blue tint. The Blue Rock Thrush also occurs in mountainous regions of mainland Greece, where its coloration comes into rather sharp contrast with the surrounding austere landscape. Conversely, the coastal rocks of the Aegean islands, suspended between sea and sky, make him a perfect match. The Blue Rock Thrush is one of the most widespread bird species in the Aegean. It is also a strictly sedentary bird that nests in safe rock cracks. The male's melodious song begins at the end of winter, a pleasant sound to the ears of the fishermen who frequent the coastal waters. Its looks and song distinguish it as one of the most noticeable birds, wherever it occurs, and a favourite in Greek folk songs.
