Education and Public Awareness for Sustainability Thessaloniki. Greece, 8-12 December 1997 A new vision of the role of education and public awareness in achieving sustainability has emerged during the last few years. Education is no longer seen as an objective in and of itself but as a means to bring about changes in behavior and lifestyles, to disseminate knowledge and develop skills, and to prepare the public to support changes towards sustainability emanating from other sectors of society. A new international consensus and framework for action has emerged from the series of conferences organized by the United Nations, beginning in 1992 with environment and development in Rio, and followed by population in Cairo (1994), social development in Copenhagen (1995), women in Beijing (1995), and human settlements in lstanbul (1996). A special work programme on chapter 36 of Agenda 21 was initiated in 1996 by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development {CSD}. The Conference in Thessaloniki is being organized by UNESCO and the Government of Greece. The Conference is being held at an important juncture, five years after UNCED and the Toronto ECO-ED Conference, and twenty years after the Tbilisi Conference on Environmental Education. Participants will be experts invited from around the world and others, active in this field. The United Nations System as a whole will be involved.
