Description:

Tymfristos (Velouchi) is one of the highest mountains of Greece, with extensive alpine and sub-alpine grassland and an extensive forest of the endemic greek fir, Abies cephalonica. Tymfristos mountain (2316 m), characterized by Fagetalia and by Daphno-Festucetalia, could be considered part of the continental biogeographic region.


Habitat Types:

Constantly flowing Mediterranean rivers: Paspalo-Agrostidion and hanging curtains of Salix and Populus alba, Intermittently flowing Mediterranean rivers, Juniperus oxycedrus arborescent matorral, Stepped and garland grasslands, Vegetated calcareous inland cliffs with chasmophytic vegetation, Limestone pavements, Olea and Ceratonia forests


Plant Species:

Centaurea alba ssp. princeps.


Animal Species:

Barbastella barbastellus, Canis lupus, Bombina variegata, Testudo hermanni, Testudo marginata, Elaphe situla.

Significance:

Although it is a quite degraded and virtually unprotected area, it is of great importance because of: 1. The nesting of threatened birds, especially birds of prey. 2. The presence of species that face the danger of extinction, e.g., the presence of Canis lupus, near the southern boundary of its distribution. 3. The presence of many endemic and local endemic species of invertebrates (Orthoptera and Coleoptera) and of plants, most of them protected by legislation.
